In
each of these toys, the Gilbert Erector Set 1909 (13) and Multisensory
Play Station at The Center for Disabled Children circa 1990 (14),
despite their dates of invention differing by almost a century,
a child's curiosity is encouraged by the potential for multiple
configurations. A child's development was also a concept explored
by Friedrich Wilhelm August Froebel in designing the first kindergarten
in 1851, in which a series of gifts were given to young pupils.
The environment in which we are raised, our culture, has a profound
affect on our predispositions. How would it feel to be raised
in each of these environments: single-membrane-structured inflatables
(15), baobaob tree in Africa as a dwelling (16)?
