representation of the symbiosis of tools, materials, and processes
that create an undulating atmosphere of warmth and comfort.(9)
While the support structure mimics the columns of tree trunks,
plastic, wood and concrete duplicate circular patterns in space.(8)
Even the shallow entrance opens up to the expansive interior
inspiring awe.(10) Victor was fascinated with vernacular buildings
in that they used honest materials appropriate to their locale.
Located in Trinidad, Colorado, Drop City was termed by him to
be a "postindustrial example of a vernacular building."9
Constructed from junked cars and plywood, these Zomes married
tools, materials, and processes by forming domes based on the
"stretched" polyhedral.(11) Similar in structure,
this Dodecainflatohedron multiple-skin weekend house in Chrysalis
(12) was composed of a material emphasizing its temporary nature,
which might not have garnered the same approval from Victor.
ASSOCIATION
Victor stressed the importance of including the users in designing
a product to create an experience which appeals to their five
plus senses. This is especially important in the early development
phases of a child when his/her ideas of family and culture are
being formed. In designing toys, he insisted on consulting children
directly and encouraged attentive responses to their curiosity.10
