Shiva, the Indian goddess of life and light, is the source
of eternal happiness.9 Each
earthenware plate, with its universal lines, symbols, geometries,
and shapes, 10 personifies the energetic fragility of life.
Ettore places no distinction between people in the land of myth,
the land of the dead, and the land of the living. They are all
equally genuine to him, and this is conveyed in the simplistic
beauty of the Shiva series with its primitive ubiquitous geometry.
People are the make-up of existence and must be portrayed in the
quintessence of a design; otherwise the designers moral
obligation for substance would be lacking.
* Ettore started designing ceramics in 1956, much to the demise
of his patron Irving Richards who eventually went out of business.8
However this did not deter Ettore and he continued sketching a
series of ceramic designs, many of which were produced by different
sponsors.
